BIOGAS GENERATORS

These simple, but effective units were designed by the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute. They run on a mixture of cow manure and water and generate methane gas that is then used for cooking.

Beneficial effects include:

  • reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • better fertilizer value from the composted manure
  • reduced smoke in houses (reduced respiratory disease – particularly among women and children)
  • reduced time required by women to gather wood for cooking
  • composting of manure reduces the risk of spread of infectious diseases that can be transmitted through manure
