COMPUTING EMISSIONS

Computing exact emissions from various sources is complicated. As a small organization, FHF does not have the resources to develop a full fledged on-line emission calculator for emissions from many sources. Consequently, you can:

Once you have your emissions computed, RETURN to the FHF web site to determine the cost of the required carbon credits and to purchase carbon credits.

Driving Emissions
The emissions from driving 10,000 km in each of the following vehicles are as follows. (Note, on average Canadians drive about 20,000 km per year)
Year Model Tonnes of CO2
2006 Toyota Prius 1
2006 Honda Civic 1.6
2006 Ford Taurus 2.3
2006 Chevrolet Silverado 3.0
2006 Lincoln Navigator 3.6

Air Travel Emissions
Emissions generated from a round trip from Charlottetown along thees routes will generate the following emissions.
Route (round trip) Tonnes of CO2
Charlottetown – Halifax 0.2
Charlottetown – Montreal - Ottawa 0.5
Charlottetown – Montreal - Vancouver 2.0
Charlottetown – Halifax London (UK) 2.2
Charlottetown – Halifax - Jamaica 1.6
Charlottetown – Toronto - Beijing 5.6

Home Electricity Use

1000 KWh of electricity use in PEI generates 0.7 Tonnes of CO2. Estimate your electricity consumption from your electric bill use the following formula to calculate your annual emissions.

annual emissions = KWh/1000 * 0.72

An average household using 10,000 KWh in a year would generate 7.2 Tonnes of emissions.

Home Heating

Burning 1000 Litres of oil generates 2.7 Tonnes of CO2. Estimate your oil use from your home heating bill and use the following formula to calculate your annual emissions.

annual emissions = Lof oil/1000 * 2.7

An average household burning 2,000 Litres of oil in a year would generate 5.4 Tonnes of emissions.

On-line Calculators
For more detailed calculations ...

The following web sites will allow you to do more specific calculations, particularly for driving and air travel emissions.

Just remember .... we would appreciate you returning to Farmers Helping Farmers to purchase your credits (all of the above sites also sell carbon credits).
