New project grows awareness of diseases that can spread from humans to animals
Farmers Helping Farmers has a new project called Gender Responsive One Health Project (GROH). With the More Food, Better Food project just about completed, this project will continue our work with families in Meru County. Funding for this project comes from Global Affairs Canada and Alinea, a Canadian for-profit based in Alberta. Alinea is the lead partner. The project will be implemented in Kenya and Ethiopia with FHF working on the community section in Kenya. FHF will continue to work with our current rural partners and later, the project will be expanded to bring in new partners in the adjacent areas.

The One Health aspect of the project is to make people in the area aware of diseases which can be spread to humans from animals. This list includes diseases like rabies, anthrax and Brucella. The project will monitor these diseases in the area and educate rural residents on how to avoid becoming ill with them. The GROH project will also work with our partner schools to improve their food safety around their feeding programs.

There will be an economic development component with this project which will allow FHF to continue educating farm families on how to produce more milk and establishing small flocks of laying hens for better family nutrition and improved income.
