Emily Wells fundraiser supports the work of the Farmers Helping Farmers Education Committee in Kenya
Thank you to Chef Emily Wells and her team at The Mill in New Glasgow, all of the volunteers, food suppliers, and everyone who attended the 2024 Fall Harvest Suppers!
Chef Emily is excited to announce that this year’s event raised an impressive $12,150 that will support the work of the Farmers Helping Farmers Education Committee.
New this year, guests were served githeri on their way into the restaurant by UPEI masters nutrition student Glory, who is studying here, and FHF poultry technician Eric, who is visiting P.E.I. this month.
Githeri is a dish made of maize and beans, served for every lunch at the 22 Kenyan schools in Meru County where Farmers Helping Farmers works. There are 6,000 children served every day! Eric and Glory explained that with the addition of screenhouse gardens at these schools, the stew now has greens, including kale, squash, carrots and sweet potatoes. These vegetables add iron and Vitamin A to the students' diets. The school cooks are also encouraged to soak the beans the night before to improve digestibility and nutrient availability in the lunch meals.
The sampling of githeri made a real life connection for the P.E.I. diners who were supporting the work that Farmers Helping Farmers does at schools in Kenya.
Chef Emily also thanked the many generous Islanders who supplied food for the Fall Harvest Suppers, including:
Dairy Farmers of PEI
Arlington Orchards
Mull Na Beinne Farms
Gagne's Blueberries
Brookfield Gardens
Harvest Wholesale
Schurman's Family Farms
Soleil's Farm
Larkin Farms
Steerman's Quality Meats
Wilkie Farms
On behalf of all of our partners in Kenya, Farmers Helping Farmers says "asante sana" to Chef Emily Wells and her staff and FHF volunteers for all of their hard work in making this delicious fundraiser possible again in 2024.
